Hi Catie!
Honestly if you do not use any chemicals in your yard it should be fine. Just make sure that the weather is warm. I lived in FL for a while and the hermies loved the great outdoors. I think it is actually good for them.
There may be other reasons that your dad is concerned. Why don't you ask him what it is that is concerning to him! Maybe he is more worried that they will stray off somewhere or maybe you have cats in the area. Just talk with him and see what he says. I am sure he is only trying to help.
